I am curious what is the significance of the hatchet? It adds a level of violence into the film as he is technically hurting the tree as he climbs... wondering why? can that be played up if it has meaning?
Well, it started simply because in his bio, he was sent to prune the cherry tree, hence the axe. We kept it because he is a man who consistently crossed the boundaries of what was physically possible, pushing against the thresholds of earth's laws. It seemed important that such a man have a tool in which he conquers nature, which adds the bitter irony in the end... when the branch breaks and nature conquers him.
